Sugar (1972)

Opened at Majestic Theatre
Opened: April 9, 1972
Closed: June 23, 1974
After witnessing the St. Valentine's Day Massacre, penniless jazz musicians Jerry and Joe are in deep trouble, so they don dresses and wigs and join an all-girl band. (Wouldn't you?) Heading from freezing Chicago to sunny Miami, they find adventure and lecherous millionaires, while being pursued by notorious gangster Spats Palazzo. And, oh yes, there is also the band's singer, Sugar, who's just gorgeous and irresistible enough to force a man out of drag!

"Sugar" provided Jule Styne with the perfect opportunity to draw on his early days in the bands of jazz age Chicago, where he encountered real life gangsters such as Al Capone.
