Subways Are For Sleeping (1961)

Opened at St. James Theatre
Opened: December 27, 1961
Closed: June 23, 1962
"Right under your eyes" - on any street in Manhattan - is a world of eccentric but resourceful citizens who have traded the comforts of apartment living for the rush and noise of the New York City subway system. When a young reporter tries to throw light on the lives of these happily anonymous people, she inadvertently throws their lives - and hers - into chaos.

Loosely based on Edmund Love's book, librettists Betty Comden and Adolph Green created a fanciful and inventive tale of early non-conformists. The score's highlights include the clever beauty contestant take-off "I Was A Shoo-In," "Be A Santa," and that invitation to living in the moment, "Comes Once In A Lifetime."
