Broadway

Say, Darling (1958)

Opened at ANTA Playhouse
Opened: April 3, 1958
Closed: January 17, 1959
This wry, sly, and very funny play is about the trials and tribulations of a young writer transforming his novel into a Broadway hit. Richard Bissell, who wrote Say, Darling (with Marian Bissell and Abe Burrows), happened to be a young novelist who had just emerged from the trials and tribulations of transforming his novel 7 1/2 Cents into the Broadway hit The Pajama Game. Say, Darling is filled with sharp but affectionate portraits of the people Bissell met on the road to Broadway (Harold Prince, George Abbot, Richard Adler, et al). To complete the package, the show includes clever song satires by lyricists Betty Comden and Adolph Green and composer Jule Styne.
