Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1949)

Opened at Ziegfeld Theatre
Opened: December 8, 1949
Closed: September 15, 1951
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is the hilarious tale of gold-digging showgirl Lorelei Lee, and Dorothy Shaw, Lorelei's free-loving companion, the men they pursue, the policemen they dodge, and the glittering jewels that occasionally adorn their shapely figures as they sail to Paris in the 1920s. This smash hit combines the satiric genius of novelist Anita Loos, the structural excellence of playwright Joseph Fields, and the wit of lyricist Leo Robin with Jule Styne's spectacularly jazzy score. As Lorelei Lee, Carol Channing catapulted to stardom with the show-stopping "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend."
