Fade Out - Fade In (1964)

Opened at Mark Hellinger Theatre
Opened: May 26, 1964
Closed: April 17, 1965
Anything could happen in the Hollywood of the 1930s, and in a twist of fate, movie usher Hope Springfield becomes glamorous movie star Lila Tremaine. This delightful romp combines a satire of Hollywood politics with a send-up of the rags-to-riches tales that were a staple of Depression-era movies.

Librettists Betty Comden and Adolph Green and composer Jule Styne created an affectionate portrait of Tinseltown, filled with great up-tempo songs ("Call Me Savage"), hilarious character turns ("My Fortune Is My Face"), and on-target Hollywood parodies ("You Mustn't Be Discouraged"  - which brought down the house nightly as Carol Burnett donned a curly wig and portrayed Shirley Temple).
